Imaging/Ultrasound

At Avonhead Vets we have full x-ray capabilities and are fast and efficient, reducing stress for your pet.

X-Ray Machine (Radiograph)

Radiographs allow us to see the outline of organs, gas and bone – which is a helpful diagnostic tool. They allow us to diagnose a wide range of injuries or diseases – everything from cancer to foreign bodies, fractured bones, bladder stones, and heart and lung abnormalities.

Dental Radiographs

In dogs and cats, more than 50% of the tooth is below the gum-line. The visible part of the tooth gives you less than half of the information you need. Having the dental x-ray helps shows which teeth need to be extracted, if any! Also, it aids our veterinarians, showing if the job is complete, or if there is more work to be done. For example, root tips can be left behind and can cause severe dental pain for a pet.

Ultrasound

To complement our radiology capabilities, we can also perform ultrasound in-clinic. This procedure is a non-invasive way to obtain images on internal organs such as their liver, heart and kidneys. Thus, allowing us to check their function and help with diagnostics. We commonly perform pregnancy ultrasounds in bitches and queens.

Cardiac Ultrasound & ECG

Ultrasounds are a useful resource in cardiac (heart) cases showing:

  • Hypertrophy (thickening of the heart muscles)
  • Valve abnormalities
  • Pericardial effusions

To accompany cardiac ultrasounds, we can perform an ECG (electrocardiograph) to determine distinctive arrhythmias which occur with specific cardiac diseases.
