Designed for Your Pet’s Comfort

Separate Cat & Dog Hospital Wards

Our modern veterinary hospital is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and low-stress environment for every patient. Separate, fully equipped feline and canine wards help reduce stress during hospitalisation, while in-floor heating, heat pumps, and ventilation systems maintain a warm, comfortable environment throughout your pet’s stay.

Within our treatment area, dedicated hospital cages allow our qualified veterinary nurses to closely monitor patients requiring intensive or critical care. Every patient receives individual attention to support their comfort, recovery, and wellbeing.

Our hospital is equipped with advanced patient care equipment, including a Bair Hugger active warming system to help maintain body temperature during surgery and recovery, reducing the risk of hypothermia. We also have a dedicated incubator for newborn puppies and kittens delivered by caesarean section, as well as critically ill patients who require additional warmth and close monitoring. Portable oxygen therapy units are available to provide oxygen support wherever it is needed within the hospital, allowing us to care for patients experiencing respiratory distress or other critical conditions.

We provide soft, clean bedding, fresh water, and appropriate nutrition throughout your pet’s stay. A range of specialised diets is available to meet individual medical and nutritional needs, unless food or water needs to be temporarily withheld as part of treatment.

To further reduce anxiety, we use Pet Remedy, Feliway and Adaptil diffusers throughout our hospital wards to help create a calm and reassuring environment for both cats and dogs. Our team also follows a low-stress, “less is more” handling approach, working gently and at each pet’s pace to minimise fear and make their hospital experience as comfortable as possible.

IV Fluid Therapy

Supporting Recovery & Critical Care

Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy is an essential part of veterinary treatment, helping to restore hydration, maintain blood pressure, support organ function, and aid recovery in a wide range of medical conditions.

At Avonhead Vets, we provide IV fluid therapy for routine surgical patients, emergency and critical care cases, geriatric pets, and animals experiencing dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhoea, or other illnesses. Fluid therapy also plays an important role in managing pets with chronic kidney (renal) disease.

Once an intravenous catheter has been placed, it provides secure access for administering fluids as well as essential or life-saving medications when required. This allows our veterinary team to respond quickly and provide ongoing treatment safely and efficiently.

To ensure every patient receives the correct amount of fluid, all IV fluids are delivered using modern infusion pumps. These pumps accurately control both the flow rate and the volume administered, reducing the risk of over- or under-hydration and allowing treatment to be tailored to each pet’s individual needs. For additional comfort, we also use a fluid warmer to help maintain your pet’s body temperature during treatment, supporting recovery and improving overall wellbeing while they are in our care.

Qualified & Caring Veterinary Nurses

Compassionate Care Every Day

Our qualified veterinary nurses are an essential part of the Avonhead Vets team, providing compassionate, professional care for every hospitalised patient. Working alongside our veterinarians, they ensure each pet receives the attention, monitoring, and support needed throughout their stay. Our nurses are responsible for the day-to-day care of hospitalised pets, carefully monitoring patients recovering from surgery, anaesthesia, illness, or injury. They administer medications, assess and manage pain, monitor vital signs, and promptly report any changes in a patient’s condition to our veterinary team.

Patient comfort and wellbeing are always a priority. Our nurses provide soft bedding, fresh food and water where appropriate, regular toilet breaks for dogs, and maintain strict cleaning and hygiene protocols to help create a safe hospital environment. They also spend time providing gentle handling, reassurance, and plenty of TLC to help reduce stress and make every patient feel as comfortable as possible.

We understand that having a pet in hospital can be worrying, so our nursing team also keeps owners informed with regular updates on their pet’s progress, ensuring you know how your companion is recovering every step of the way.
